Nawele+1 (Imai) Subgroup
We are a natural subdivision of the Japan 2017 herd, and I think we have our own needs for coordination and communication among ourselves. So please all look and add your comments and suggestions.
(We are Robin Imai, Tim Chiang-Lin, Carol Imai, Lynn Imai, Walter Imai, and 2 children.)

In terms of communication in country, I think we are generally OK while we are staying in the AirBnb apartments, as we will have 1 or 2 additional mobile hotspots. Bryan should have data with his phone and I will add a data pass on my phone to enable using it as another hotspot. I think I heard that Robin will get a mobile hotspot? So if we are all together, we will be supersaturated with data connections (and can call each other using Hangouts or Voice Dialer).
If we go our separate ways, we are still OK in Tokyo with 2 extra hotspots. In Osaka, either Carol or Tim might not have a hotspot if they go off independently.

The least coverage will be in the transition Tokyo-Hiroshima-Osaka, and Osaka-Tokyo when we don't have the AirBnb hotspots. Most of that time we will likely be on a train or in a van, but we might separate depending on how the boys are doing and for other reasons.
I think we are likely to be OK, but I also think Carol and Tim (and Lynn should she go off on her own) should consider what they might want to do during the transition. As long as they are close to Bryan, Robin, or Walter, they should have continuous data connection. (And for that matter, airports, train stations, conbini stores, and coffee shops have free Wifi as do many NTT/Docomo and Softbank spots accessible by their apps.
A mobile hotspot runs about $60 to $70 for 2 weeks, so it is not a trivial cost.

What do you think?
Please comment.

  1. I decided to rent a WIFI thing. I feel "safer" having one with me (my security blanket especially when venturing out alone). The one thing I'm concerned about is having enough outlets in our apartments for all of us to charge our devices each night. My friend told me that when she left her hotel rooms in Japan when she took the key, the electricity automatically turns off. So she thought she was charging her phone while outside but it wasn't until she returned to the room. Not sure if our airbnbs work on the same principal or not.

  2. Carol Imai OK. Did you already get a mobile hotspot?
I think that is correct about the master power control probably includes outlets? Major appliances must still get power? I guess we'll find out.
